Long Covid

Advancing Treatment

Long COVID refers to the health problems that one may have long-term after recovering from COVID-19.  The Center for Disease Control (CDC) Long-COVID diagnosis criteria are as follows: New, recurring or continuation of symptoms > 4 weeks after acute COVID infection. Most notable Long-COVID symptoms include fatigue, post exertional malaise and brain fog.

Antiviral therapy may hold promise for treating Long Covid

The mechanisms by which COVID-19 causes lingering symptoms in survivors are not fully understood but are hypothesized to result from:

  • Immune-system overdrive triggered by the COVID-19 virus, including increased production of autoantibodies
  • Lingering infection
  • Co-infection/reactivation of previous viral infections that were dormant

Unmet Medical Need

In 2022, A 2022 CDC estimate revealed 3.4% of adults exhibited active Long-COVID sequelae, representing 11.2M US citizens

At that same time, Brookings Metro estimated that

  • Around 16 million working-age Americans (those aged 18 to 65) had long COVID.
  • Of those, 2 to 4 million are out of work due to long COVID.
  • In 2024 the Wall Street Journal reported that
  • “Long Covid Knocked a Million Americans Off Their Career Paths”

The annual cost of those lost wages alone from Long COVID is estimated around $170 billion a year (and potentially as high as $230 billion). With Long COVID the patient’s unmet needs fall into 3 main categories:

1) occupational and financial;

2) healthcare-related; and

3) social and emotional support, emerged as areas affecting quality of life.

The NIH $1.6 billion long Covid initiative has failed so far to meet its goals.  The initiative was funded to help the millions of Americans who experience brain fog, fatigue, and other symptoms after recovering from a coronavirus infection.  Over $1 billion has been spent to date with no treatments coming to market yet.
